Setting aside your somewhat astonishing situation, are you still
generally against absentee voting? Are the voting machines now checked out
to you for their 'overnighter' prior to the election?
By the way, as a general announcement, around a month ago I
announced that I would have probably have voting machines in my garage for
inspection (during the typical 2 week, 'overnighter' discussed in the Union
Tribune article just sent). Despite being desperate for experienced help,
the local Registrar of Voters, Mikel Haas, promptly uninvited me from
participating in this election. Therefore I have to report that the
machines will be not be available for inspection. Also, I must caution
everyone, based on my experience, that Registrars' fear of embarrassment due
to bad publicity seems to over rule all other objective considerations.

My recommendation if you want to vote a paper ballot that is directly counted is to request an absentee ballot, with the request received by the Registrar of Voters by 5pm on Tuesday, October 31. You will get an absentee ballot in the mail that you can deposit at any polling place in the county on election day. If you fail to get the mailed absentee ballot in time to vote, you may still vote provisionally, either electronically or "on paper" in your precinct on election day (or even in another precinct in the same county, although you might not be able to vote on local measures that way).
